Multimodal Prompting for World Records

We want to introduce kids to the idea of exploring with generative AI. At the same time, we want them to understand that generative AI tries to "guess" sometimes, just like they might guess on a test when they don't know the answer. Kids will learn to explore and then fact check world records.

Multimodal Prompting for World Records

We want to introduce kids to the idea of exploring with generative AI. At the same time, we want them to understand that generative AI tries to "guess" sometimes, just like they might guess on a test when they don't know the answer. Just like anything where we care about facts, we want kids to learn to check multiple sources of evidence to determine if something is true. Kids will learn to fact check generative AI.

Materials Needed

  • Camera or smartphone for taking pictures
  • Access to ChatGPT, Claude, or another multimodal generative AI
  • Guinness World Records book or Internet access to search for real world records
  • A device for recording findings (notebook, tablet, etc.)

Activity Steps:

  1. Introduce the Activity:
    • Discuss what world records are and how they are documented.
    • Discuss that they are going to take pictures of things and then you will collect the pictures to see if generative AI can find any world records related to them.
    • Explain that generative AI might "dream up" a world record, similar to how they might guess on a test if they didn't know the answer.
    • Explain that they are going to try and spot any mistakes the generative AI makes by looking up the world records either in the Guiness Book of World Records or by an Internet search.
  2. Photo Session:
    • Ask the kids to take pictures of interesting things so that we can later see if there are world records related to them, like the "biggest sandwich", "most books stacked up in one place", "biggest water bottle", etc.
    • Ask your kids to take clear and interesting photos of anything unusual or curious. What types of photos might create amazing records? Is it wacky things or everyday items?
    • Spend a few minutes collecting diverse and clear pictures.
    • Example: "Let's take photos of the craziest, most interesting things we can find. Make sure each photo is clear!"
  3. Prompting the Generative AI:
    • Open up ChatGPT or whatever generative AI app you are using.
    • Type in the prompt:
      • "Please tell me any world records related to what is shown in the photo."
    • Attach one of the photos to the prompt (typically this is done by finding the "+" or paperclip icon near the prompt)
    • Pay Attention:
      • Does the AI spot things in the image that you didn't expect and give you world records related to them?
      • Does it see things in the background of the sandwich picture and tell you the record related to the biggest plate or most mayo used on a sandwich?
  4. Fact Checking Process:
    • Verify each AI-provided world record by checking in the Guinness World Records book or through a supervised Internet search.
    • Points System:
      • Award points each time kids identify an incorrect AI response.
      • Example: "The AI says this is the world record for the biggest sandwich. Let’s look it up! If it’s wrong, you get a point!"
  5. Reflection on Findings:
    • Talk about any mistakes the AI made and the correct information. Highlight AI’s strengths and limitations.
    • Example: "What mistakes did the AI make? Were any responses correct? Let's discuss why it’s important to verify what the AI tells us." "What types of things caused the aI to make mistakes?"
  6. Interactive Discussion:
    • Discuss how the AI made connections based on the photos. Consider other uses and limitations of AI.
      • What other types of things could we get generative AI to tell us about a photo?
    • Highlight the importance of verifying information and not taking AI responses at face value.
    • Example: "How did the AI come up with these answers? Could it help us with other questions or problems? Why do we need to verify its answers?"
    • What new problems might we solve by taking photos and asking questions?
